Healthcare Standards Organizations

Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB)

The FSMB is the national organization of the various state medical boards. It is also the keeper of the Board Action Data Bank, which is the central repository for formal actions taken against physicians.

Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)

JCAHO evaluates and accredits healthcare organizations and programs in the United States and is the predominant standards-setting and accrediting body in healthcare.

National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA)

NCQA is an independent, non-profit organization whose mission is to evaluate and report on the quality of the nation’s managed care organizations

Utilization Review Accreditation Commission (URAC)

URAC is a nationally recognized quality improvement organization that reviews and audits a broad array of healthcare service functions and systems. Quality benchmarking activities cover health plans, preferred provider organizations, medical management systems, health technology services, health call centers, specialty care, workers’ compensation, Websites, and HIPAA privacy and security compliance, among other areas.
