Connections September 2011: Agent Newsletter - Life Insurance

September 14, 2011

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month

You know about the amazing benefits that life insurance provides - paying off debts and loans, pre-funding a child's college education, keeping a family business in the family, and more. So why has the number of U.S. adults without life insurance dramatically increased for every age group since 2004? Why do 95 million American adults today have no life insurance at all?

These statistics may be due to a lack of awareness, so the LIFE Foundation, a nonprofit organization, dedicates September as Life Insurance Awareness Month. Take time to consider the LIMRA Facts About Life 2011 and share them in conversation with your clients:

  • Only 13 percent of 18-to 24-year-old-men had individual policies in 2010, compared with 30 percent in 1998.
  • Women 55 and older are considerably less likely than men the same age to own life insurance.
  • Hispanics are less likely to feel insurance agents are knowledgeable and are less likely to buy insurance from an agent.

Employees might not be aware of life insurance benefits provided by their employer or that they may have the option to increase their coverage with them. At this time of year particularly, as you prepare for open enrollment, make sure to promote employee education and awareness. Arm yourself with the tools you'll need, such as the email templates and web banners that link to Humana's educational videos on term and whole life insurance. Find them at www.humana.com/vbtools, or contact your sales executive for more information.
