NEW ORLEANS, LA - Apr 26, 2006 - The David Toms Foundation and The Humana Foundation are joining forces to support four New Orleans-based children's charities with grants totaling $400,000. Reconcile New Orleans, Kingsley House, Desire Street Academy and City Year Louisiana will receive $100,000 each to advance hurricane relief efforts.
Following Hurricane Katrina, David Toms, a leading PGA TOUR professional, made a plea to help raise money for the hurricane victims. Toms, partnering with several organizations, was able to raise more than $1.5 million. Though the majority of the money raised was used in Northwest Louisiana to help displaced residents immediately after the storm, the David Toms Foundation's partnership with The Humana Foundation has targeted four $100,000 grants to be donated to New Orleans charities. The efforts of David Toms and Humana are a prime example of how the golf world has joined together to aid the relief effort. It was announced earlier this week that donations to the U.S. Golf Hurricane Relief Fund, a collaborative effort led by the PGA TOUR and other major golf organizations, had surpassed $5 million. "Our Foundation was fortunate enough to help hundreds of families who evacuated to the Shreveport area, but we always wanted to do something in New Orleans when the timing was right," said Toms. "These four charities do outstanding work and will make a positive difference in many children's lives. I want to thank Humana and everyone else who so kindly contributed to our Foundation to make these gifts possible." Virginia Judd, executive director of The Humana Foundation, said of the collaboration between the foundations, "We appreciate the thoughtful approach the David Toms Foundation is taking in their Katrina response. The Humana Foundation has taken similar steps in our own response by making an immediate gift and reserving funds to stimulate longer-term efforts." "We appreciate the important work of these local organizations to restore normalcy and to help New Orleans once again become a vibrant place to work, live and visit," said Jamie Schlottman, president of Humana Health Benefit Plan of Louisiana, Inc. In responding to the recovery of the Gulf Coast region, Humana and the company's associates have donated more than $1.6 million to disaster relief efforts in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. About the Charities In its first five years of operation, Reconcile New Orleans' Youth Workforce Program has successfully enrolled more than 250 youth to learn basic life, interpersonal and work skills to enable and empower them to successfully enter the second largest non-governmental workforce in New Orleans-the entertainment and hospitality industry. Since Hurricane Katrina, Reconcile New Orleans is expanding its restaurant and hospitality training to also include the growing area of construction trades. Kingsley House provides a vast array of essential services, vital resources and life enhancing supports so that families can fully participate in the recovery and rebuilding of New Orleans. They provide daily care and early education while parents do recovery work at their houses. They assist families with obtaining health insurance, food stamps and other necessities and provide door to door outreach to families helping to link them to programs that will help them. The David Toms Foundation provides opportunities for at-risk boys and girls. The Foundation helps underprivileged, abused and abandoned children through funding programs that are designed to enhance a child's character, self-esteem and career possibilities. About The Humana Foundation We are committed to serving the needs of children, families and seniors in their quest to build healthier lives and communities. We embrace health as a balanced state of well-being, recognizing an interrelationship between mind, body and spirit. About Humana Over its 45-year history, Humana has consistently seized opportunities to meet changing customer needs.
