JAM - About Humana
Humana is one of the nation's largest publicly traded health benefits companies, with approximately 7 million medical members located primarily in 15 states and Puerto Rico.

Humana offers health insurance products and related services - through traditional and consumer choice plans - to employer groups, government-sponsored plans, and individuals.

Humana and CAM
Humana has historically embraced change and opportunities to reshape our company and the health care industry.

One of those changes is to lead the industry in supporting the integration of traditional medicine with complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in three ways.

1. Humana encourages consumer empowerment
Even the most confident person can become completely frustrated when immersed in the health care system. Consumers are expected to buy services without knowing all of the costs, follow instructions without understanding the reasons, and accept decisions without giving any input.

Humana encourages members to assume more control over their health. When people are given clear information and guidance, they have the resources to make the right decisions for themselves. When they understand their options and the financial impact of their decisions, they do a better job of managing their health care.

2. Humana provides access to Dr. Sam
Humana has shown its commitment to CAM by making Dr. Samuel Benjamin corporate medical director of integrative health strategies. He advises Humana on CAM issues, conducts his radio program, oversees his Website, and makes personal appearances on behalf of Humana.

3. Humana provides discounts on CAM to its members
Humana provides special discounts - often 10 to 30 percent - on CAM services that aren't part of a member's covered benefit or mandated services, although a few CAM services are included in some of Humana's medical plans.

The program allows members and Humana associates to receive acupuncture, massage therapy, and chiropractic service from a network of providers at a discounted rate.

These services are to be used when the covered visits have been exhausted. The goal of the program is to offer consumers choices in managing their health care. Many people currently pay out-of-pocket for supplemental health services.

American WholeHealth Network
Providers contracted through American WholeHealth Network (AWHN) provide their services under the CAM Provider Discount Program. You can find a provider by visiting humana.wholehealthmd.com

Chiropractic and acupuncture services
Chiropractic and acupuncture services are sometimes eligible for reimbursement with FSA or PCA funds, depending on an employer's guidelines. Massage therapy usually must be prescribed by a doctor.

CAM discount
The CAM discount is offered to supplement coverage. In some states, chiropractic services are covered by Humana medical plans. There is no charge for Humana members or Humana associates for the CAM discount program.
