Eight Keys to Good Health

Dr. Sam Benjamin has helped patients and radio listeners with his brand of health care advice - combining both conventional medicine and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). These are Dr. Sam's opinions on the eight keys to optimizing your health.

Only healthy young people take good health for granted. The rest of us know the truth: you have to work at having and keeping good health.
Eight Keys
Key 1 More is not necessarily better. Even though we have the most expensive health care in the world, health outcomes for Americans are not as good as they are in many other countries - because we don't make good decisions for ourselves. This is our money we're spending. It's time to treat health care like other consumer purchases - just like buying a new car or appliance.

Key 2 The American medical community has taken over (I call it "medicalized") our entire society - everyone has a disease, every disease is critical, everyone needs some form of therapy or medicine.

While we've moved away from the "doctor-is-god" belief system, we still don't challenge health practitioners. If they say, "jump," we jump. If they say, "take this medicine," we do it. If they say, "have this expensive test," we put on the gown and scoot up on the table. We don't do our homework. We don't ask why we're doing it. That should change.

Key 3 To use the health care system appropriately, we need to treat our bodies better, too - by avoiding illness altogether. We eat too much and we indulge our every desire. We supersize our lifestyles. We live "extremes."

But having more things, more food, more money, more access to health care doesn't make us healthier. The fact is that we have some control over many of the important health indicators, such as exercise, obesity, sexual behaviors, and more.

Key 4 Do you think you're too old or out-of-shape to start exercising? Or are you too bored? Many people try - and then stop - exercising because they're bored. But they just need to vary their workouts. If you've quit exercising because it's too hard, read Dr. Sam's articles about walking -an easy, low-risk way to exercise. A regular exercise program can help improve your health in many ways.

Key 5 We eat too many calories, pushing our insulin levels up. We eat lots of processed foods. We drink lots of sodas and consume sugar substitutes as if they were good for us, which they're not! We eat lots of "low-fat" food without understanding they're high in calories. And we consume lots and lots of bad fats. All of this leads to obesity, which is a huge problem in this country.

Obesity can cause high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, cancer, and more rapid aging. Do we really need more "seat room" so we can chow down, or do we need to address obesity at its cause? Dr. Sam believes many of us have ourselves to blame for our poor health.

Key 6 You can help yourself stay healthy by taking care of your feelings, your emotions, your mind, and your body. Dr. Sam believes in the association of the mind and the body, and the use of techniques such as meditation, guided imagery, yoga, and biofeedback to help relieve mental and physical suffering without medicine.

Key 7 Polluted environments - both indoor and outdoor - are some of the greatest threats to your health - including what you breathe, eat, drink, apply to your skin and hair, and expose your bodies to. Pollution is greater inside your home than outside, with pollutants you may never stop to think about - such as internal gas sources, volatile organic compounds in furniture and carpets, body sprays, air fresheners, and more.

Key 8 There is evidence to support prayer as an integral part of the healing process. In one study of long-distance healing, mental healing, spiritual healing, or therapeutic touch, 57 percent of study participants showed statistically significant improvements. Government statistics indicate that 50 percent of adult Americans pray. Many people - 45 percent of Americans - pray for health reasons, especially for their own health.
