Supplements to treat arthritis

supplements
A lot has been said lately about arthritis medications.

If you're looking for over-the-counter supplements to help with pain management and/or the development of stronger bones and joints, consider these supplements.

Calcium
Calcium and exercise work hand-in-hand to build and maintain strong bones throughout your lifetime. A calcium supplement and a calcium-rich diet help keep bones strong and can lower the risk of osteoporosis.

Glucosamine and chondroitin
Glucosamine and/or chondroitin supplements are often recommended by doctors for relieving osteoarthritis pain and stiffness and possibly stopping further loss of cartilage.

Omega-3 fatty acids
To keep your joints healthy, or to ease pain and inflammation in joints, consume omega-3 oil, which is found in many types of fish (salmon, mackerel) or flaxseed.

SAM-e
In one study, SAM-e (S-Adenosyl Methionine), pronounced "sammy," was as effective as a NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, like aspirin, ibupropren, or naproxen) in reducing swelling and relieving joint pain.

SAM-e is not a vitamin, a hormone, or an herb. It's an amino acid manufactured in the brain - and, in its synthesized form, is considered to be helpful in osteoarthritis pain relief and joint repair in athletes and older folks. Because dosage and effectiveness is still unclear, check with your doctor before using SAM-e.

Also, it is an expensive supplement (ranging from $2.50 to $18 a day), and results take a long time. Eat a lot of fruit, vegetables, and take a B vitamin supplement with SAM-e. Side effects could include stomach upset and gastrointestinal problems.

The verdict is not in on this product but SAM-e occurs naturally in the body and no significant toxicity has yet been identified. What is certain is that - to date - NSAIDs still have worse side effects than Sam-e.

SAM-e also elevates mood and has been used to treat mild to moderate depression. It is said to have a healthy effect on your liver as well. Researchers also have one important concern: SAM-e might raise your risk of heart disease and no one knows yet how much. So, discuss SAM-e with your doctor before taking it.
