Dieting Mediterranean style

mediterranean diet
The incidence of heart disease and the rate of deaths from heart disease is lower in Mediterranean countries than in the United States.

This may be due to a combination of diet and lifestyle factors.

While diets in Mediterranean countries vary, most have these features in common:

  • High in fruits, vegetables, bread and other cereals, potatoes, beans, nuts, and seeds

  • Olive oil as an important source of monounsaturated fat (which doesn't raise blood cholesterol levels the way saturated fat does)

  • Low to moderate amounts of wine, dairy products, fish, and poultry; very little red meat
