Symptoms to watch for
The most common asthma symptoms:
- Coughing, especially at night
- Wheezing a high-pitched whistling sound when exhaling
- Shortness of breath
- Tightness, pain, or pressure in the chest
These are some less common symptoms of an asthma attack but they could also signal problems besides asthma, such as bronchitis or emphysema:
- Rapid breathing
- Sighing
- Fatigue or inability to exercise properly
- Difficulty sleeping
- Anxiety or difficulty concentrating
- Chronic cough without wheezing
Your symptoms may vary, from mild to severe, with each asthma attack and you may have different symptoms at different times. That's why it's so important to work with your doctor to set short- and long-term goals and a treatment plan. If you don't get better after a few months of treatment or if your symptoms worsen, you should see a specialist a doctor who is board-certified as an allergist, immunologist, or pulmonologist.
