Symptoms to watch for

The most common asthma symptoms:

  • Coughing, especially at night
  • Wheezing — a high-pitched whistling sound when exhaling
  • Shortness of breath
  • Tightness, pain, or pressure in the chest

These are some less common symptoms of an asthma attack — but they could also signal problems besides asthma, such as bronchitis or emphysema:

  • Rapid breathing
  • Sighing
  • Fatigue or inability to exercise properly
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Anxiety or difficulty concentrating
  • Chronic cough without wheezing

Your symptoms may vary, from mild to severe, with each asthma attack — and you may have different symptoms at different times. That's why it's so important to work with your doctor to set short- and long-term goals and a treatment plan. If you don't get better after a few months of treatment or if your symptoms worsen, you should see a specialist — a doctor who is board-certified as an allergist, immunologist, or pulmonologist.
