Getting older means losing mental ability? Think again

Just because you’re getting older doesn’t mean your brain power has to fade. By following a few simple strategies, you can keep your mind sharper as you celebrate more years.

Help your memory

Several simple strategies can help you boost your brain power.
  • Take notes. Keep your mind alert by writing down phone numbers, names, and other important information that’s easy to forget. Writing helps you remember better. And there’s no reason to fill your mind with details you can retrieve from a writing tablet.

  • Make a routine. Store everyday items like keys or remote controls in a specific spot. After a short time, you’ll know where to find them without thinking. You’ll also save yourself a lot of frustration.

  • Repeat as necessary. When you meet people, repeat their names. This can be done during conversation or to yourself. It’s best to do this several times so the names are committed to memory. The same strategy works for vocabulary or names of places.

Keep it fresh

Just like an active body, an active brain continues to develop and thrive, while an inactive brain loses its power over time. Why not try one of these activities:
  • Read – books, magazines, newspapers, travel brochures, etc.

  • Learn to play a musical instrument

  • Learn to speak a foreign language

  • Do crossword puzzles

  • Play cards – even solitaire

Stay positive

Depression is a common cause of mental decline for older people. The good news? It’s not only treatable, but also preventable. Try these tips to help keep depression at bay:
  • Adopt an exercise routine

  • Try to have regular social contact

  • Drink alcohol only in moderation

  • Take sedatives sparingly

  • Eat a healthy diet

  • Engage in meaningful activity, such as learning, creating, working, or volunteering

If you’re feeling depressed, seek professional help – there are numerous effective treatments. If a physical condition or disability worsens your depressed mood, get the necessary medical treatment.

The bottom line

Aging doesn’t mean your mental abilities have to decline. Following simple, routine strategies can keep your mind sharp well into your golden years.
