How do you stay happy?
Wanda, Marshfield, WI
I make sure to use all of my senses every day. I smell the air whenever I go outside and am thankful for it. I feel the sun and the wind on my skin and am amazed. I stop and listen to my body and what a wonder it is. I make a point to see opportunities to help others all the time, not just family but shopping, walking, working out, everywhere, it makes me very happy to know that the person I helped will go forward feeling better and more positive.
Caron, Jeffersonville, IN

Call or visit a friend or relative, take a vacation, get outdoors, walk in the mountains, cooking something special, helping others, tackle that house cleaning or home improvement job, do something different, go to a sporting event or concert, go to a community festival or visit a local farmers market, exercise, and SMILE more and encourage others to do the same :)

Keep a positive attitude at all times. See the good in people and everything. Keep smiling.
Linda, Ruskin FL
1. Laugh at the little things, even if only to yourself. So many things occur during the day that may upset you, but if you take a second to find the humor, you are better off.
2. Look for the good in people. Many people are not the best communicators, the most friendly, or they may just seem mean. But there is always something good about them...their smile, their eyes, they are faithful, they are good to their children, etc. If I think of these things, I can smile at anybody, regardless of their actions.
Brenda
I make sure to laugh, truly laugh with my daughters! To find humor in life.
Becca, Colorado Springs, CO
I pay a compliment to a person daily and try to encourage them in a positive way whether I know them or not. I wake up and make everyday a new day adding joy & prayer to my day. I try to be very optimistic in everything I do and say throughout the day with my family, co-workers and clients that I talk with everyday. I take an hour each day to be with just me, reading, reflecting on what I have and the goals I want to challenge myself with at 65 years old. I want to continue to work until I am 70 years old as well as stay healthy to be able to donate my kidney to the Alliance of Shared Donor when my son is well enough to receive one as I have already been approved to do so.

Listen to some soothing music. If I get a chance I take a walk outside and simply enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. I smile at everyone and say Good Morning or Hello. I hum to myself whether I am sitting at my desk or walking somewhere and I listen to the kitty purr on our Search engine on the internet. That will always make me smile.
Lisa, Mabelvale, AR
Not only do you have to count your blessings, but some times you have to actually look for them. I look for the sun shining thru the trees, or a raindrop on a green leaf, the birds singing, etc. You find so many blessing when you take the time to look for them and appreciate them.

I think there is a difference between happiness and contentment - both come from within, but contentment can be present for long durations, while happiness comes from pure joy of the moment. Sitting out and enjoying birdsong and the beginnings of life during spring, the feel of a cool wind on a hot summer's day, the touch of warmth from the sun, the warmth from a shower and the beating of the water on my back, contact with friends, peers and most importantly family.
Charlie, Kansas City, MO
I have a rewarding, but high-stress job; I'm a criminal defense lawyer who defends cases where the government is seeking the death penalty. I am happiest at work when I have a plan to organize my time and efforts. At the end of the day I like to take an hour-or-so-long bike ride to de-stress. Then I can enjoy a relaxed evening.
Linda, Louisville, KY
Be thankful for all I have and thankful for all the bad things I don't have.
Stephanie Miami, FL
I play with my cat, web chat with my nieces and nephews, read, and go to the beach.
I love to read, and do that as often as I can find the time. I also love music, so I listen to it, and I play my instrument whenever I can. I think it keeps my mind working, and makes me feel good about myself. I also find that walking, which I know is good for me, also keeps my stress level balanced, so whenever the weather permits, I go outdoors and walk during my lunch hour.
Mary, Waukesha, WI
There are other things I do for myself: walk the dog, and play fetch, which keeps her happy, too. I also love to scrapbook my pictures, but I need to keep the area more organized (I'm working on that aspect). I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren. They are so enthusiastic about life. That's a high in and of itself!! It really is easy to find ways to be happy, as long as you go out of your way to look for them, you should be okay!!
Amy, Georgetown, TX
Call or send an email to a friend, and don't burden them with what is bothering you. Instead, focus on them and how your communication might make them feel better!
Get to the gym!!!! I've gotten on a treadmill with tears rolling down my cheeks and by the time I was finished, I felt like Rocky - happy and able to conquer anything!
Listen to some upbeat music - find a place you can sing out loud, play air-guitar or whatever you enjoy!
Simply get up and get busy. Sitting and dwelling on things tends to make it worse! A completed project at work, a clean kitchen sink or a yard that is mowed can all provide satisfaction and remind you that you are alive and capable!
Maria, Houston, TX
Say my morning prayers while I'm getting dressed. Give my hubby a big kiss when he drops me off at work. Run 2-3 miles everyday. Enjoy my husband's great healthy cooking. (We've both dropped 50lbs.!)

I strongly believe in prayer and how prayer changes things. I pray throughout the day. I must admit, I sometimes let my guard down, but soon realize it and pick it up again. You should be happy just being alive and on top of the ground and the ground is not on top of you.
Frederica, Nashville, TN
What simple thing do I do that makes me happy during the day? I laugh. I laugh at myself. I laugh at human behavior. I laugh at jokes. I just let myself go, and I laugh! My children ask me quite often, "Mom, do you laugh every day?" Why, of course! Laughter is the best medicine!

I keep an ongoing list of what makes me happy and keep it in a journal. It can be as simple as picking my son up from the bus stop after school, it reminds me how lucky I am do be able to do this. I read the list when I am get sad and I add to it as I go along. Clothes, expensive cars or vacation houses do not even make this list. It's those small things that mean so much that the joy it brings you is everlasting.

I keep my life busy with friends, family, hobbies and try to remember those who are less fortunate or unhappy and lonely by serving them. That always turns around to give me the blessing!
Ralph, San Antonio, TX
I have found that I stay happier if I listen to music that I enjoy instead of listening to the noise around my cubicle. However, the music needs to be something that affirms my mood without distracting me . . . so, most of the time, I listen to instrumental versions of hymns. That triggers memories of the _words_ of the hymns in the depths of my mind without really distracting me and _that_ reminds me of just how much I am blessed.
Carolyn, W. Palm Beach, FL
Try to stay busy by keeping a list of things I need to do and accomplishing them. You'd be surprised how quickly a list of "to-do's" develops. Once you start this practice, based on accomplishments on small chores, projects, you can expand your list to outside the home such as movies, books, friends all to include the social side of life which is important to have a balance in your everyday life. A full life is worth living for.

However it is amazing how my household allows me this time and nothing falls apart without me! I listen to some soothing music and relax and rejuvenate. Nothing strange - just peace and quiet. Get dirty...my 1 and 4 year old can't help but smear the drops of milk or left over ketchup on the table to see if they recognize anything in the mess, or sometimes purposely step in a puddle of water, just to see the prints after. You can always just clean-up after. It takes so little to put a smile on a child's face...why should it be so difficult now?
Carol, Lexington, KY

I read my horoscope and if it's a gloomy one, I completely disregard it - that helps keep me optimistic...after all, I choose the mood I want to be in for the day. I don't worry about anything until the time comes when I actually have to deal with it. While at work, I get up from my desk a few times a day and stroll around outside so as not to feel the day has been wasted, and upbeat music never fails to cheer me up or keep me happy.

Malynda, St. George, UT
When asked to name the one thing in my possession that consistently brings me joy, I have to reply my dog Sam! It's not that I love my dog more than my 8 year old son or my husband, but in our family Sam is our "neutral" member, he is always on everybody's side. He is always there to diffuse the negative situations and bring us all joy. Some people take deep breaths when in a compromising or frustrating situation, I envision petting my dogs head and scratching the soft spot behind his ears!!
Brittini, Houston, TX
A crooked smile from one or both of my two children - under the age of two. A rainbow in the sky after a steamy, summer rain shower. A whole-hearted laugh from a co-worker in the background. A piece of chocolate around 3 in the afternoon. Hot bubble bath before bed in a poorly lit room.

Cool breeze in the early morning while walking my dogs; wild flowers in the fields near where I live; late night stars on a clear night. Listening to the thunder and heavy rain while reading a book; children's laughter; watching my dogs play; seeing my children content with their lives.

Looking at my grand daughters photos (I have 2 granddaughters between age of 2 and 3 yrs.) that are stuck on my Refrigerator door! I see their photos as soon as I go to the kitchen after waking up as I need milk to make my early morning tea! They start my day with a smile!

I am a full time student working full time and a single mother of two. With our busy schedules I find that it is essential to my happiness to spend a little time each day doing something that I enjoy. Some days it may be reading just a few pages of a good book or snuggling with my children. Other days I have time for a long walk with a close friend. I also try to remain grateful for the gifts that I have been given such as a beautiful day, a loving family, great friends and an employer that supports my health and well being.
Cindy, Grafton WI
While I was out of work with thyroid cancer, I used my camera nearly every day. I took joy in the countryside, flowers, sunrises, sunsets around me--it always made me smile. And my family made every day worthwhile. I didn't believe in feeling sorry for myself, I was glad to be getting better. Now I sit at my desk at work surrounded by the photographs I took in the last two years. It reminds me to never overlook the beauty around us.

I send, "Hi, I'm thinking of you today." notes to special friends on the computer. I call two ladies in my Sunday School class who are homebound to let them know I'm thinking about them. I reach out to make someone else happy. When I'm the most depressed or down, I write a list of people who need to hear that someone is thinking of them.
Iris, Rochelle, VA
Starting my day by reading my Bible and praying. Praying for others when you cannot do anything else gives you a needed confirmation you have done something. You choose to let things go and let the power of God direct your life. The support of fellow Christians and living the Word of God is constant, you have hope, therefore happiness.

An early morning walk with girlfriends is a great way to start the day. They're wonderful sounding boards and always have simple solutions to life's problems. Chatting with my grown daughters and laughing about life, love and learning. Dining with my husband in the evening after a day of work. Life is there to be enjoyed.......do it while you can and the body is still able!!
Jacki Jo, Azle, Texas
I spend time with God daily and get an awesome reality check that I am a small part of a much bigger plan . I am loved and being cared for by a larger than life God who sent His son to die for my whole life and if he did that for me how much more will He provide for all my needs and cares. Then I spend moments praying and praising which transfers all my life into Gods hands and I let go and let God.

I've learned to have an attitude of gratitude. First to the one who gives us everything, God. I take it a step further as my husband and I are always thanking each other for even the little things. It makes a big difference in a marriage. Take that attitude to work and your days will be much nicer.

The one thing that keeps me going and happy is volunteering for various organizations - The League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County, The American Red Cross of Palm Beach County, and my local City of Delray Beach Library. Knowing I am helping others makes me happy!

Listen to, and sing along with, music, especially gospel. It reminds me that I'm not alone and to take care of the beautiful planet given to us. I also take my dog for walks in places where he can bark at cows and horses!!
