Use of NPI is Now Mandatory

Humana has moved into compliance with the National Provider Identifier (NPI) mandate and now enforces the use of NPI, but only on Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standard transactions. HIPAA electronic transactions included under the mandate require use of an NPI. Provider claims (HIPAA 837 I, P & D) must contain an NPI, or they will be rejected by the clearinghouses with which Humana has contracted.

Providers won’t have their NPI number posted on Electronic Remittance Advice (HIPAA 835 ERA) until after they have submitted an NPI claim. In the spirit of administrative simplification and in conjunction with recommendations from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), providers submitting paper claims are also encouraged to use their NPI.

Information related to Humana’s NPI enforcement has been posted on Humana.com and was sent to our contracted clearinghouses in the first quarter of 2008. For additional guidance, please visit Humana.com, click on the Providers section and select “NPI” from the list of “Quick Links” on the right.
