Humana Introduces Medicare PPO

In the next few months, Humana will begin offering a Medicare PPO plan in your market. You may soon begin to see Humana members in your office who are covered by this plan. Medicare PPO members will not have to select a primary care physician and will not need a referral to visit specialists.

Physicians who accept Medicare but do not participate in Humana’s Medicare PPO network can still treat Humana Medicare PPO members at a nonparticipating provider rate.

Humana expects the Medicare PPO plan to appeal to active seniors who have more disposable income. These seniors are interested in broader physician network choices and a wider array of benefits than those typically offered by Medicare HMO plans. According to research conducted by Humana’s Innovation Center, benefit design is the most important factor for seniors who choose PPO plans, while lower overall cost is the most important consideration for seniors who choose an HMO plan.

Humana’s Medicare PPO service will provide easy access, a strong out-of-network benefit and other attractive features such as:

• Low or no copayments to see physicians.
• Prescription drugs, including coverage for brand names and lifestyle drugs like weight loss medications, Viagra and Retin-A.
• Standard dental coverage, including
  regular cleanings, evaluations and X-rays.
• Cosmetic dentistry coverage, including direct composite resin restorations and an external bleaching benefit.
• Foreign travel benefit.
• Coverage for vitamins and other nutraceutical supplements.

Practices will receive more specific information about Medicare PPO benefits in their geographic area in the next few months.
