| Reminder:
Flu Vaccines
With
winter months just around the corner, flu season is in sight.
Physicians can play a significant role in educating patients
to take responsibility for their preventive care. You may
want to consider discussing precautions about the illness
with those most likely (or their caregivers) to contract the
flu. The following groups are at the highest risk for developing
complications from the flu and should receive the vaccine,
according to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices
of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
- adults 50 years and older,
- adults and children with chronic conditions and/or immunosupression,
- pregnant women in their second or third trimester,
- residents of long-term care facilities and
- persons who can transmit influenza to those at high risk.
The CDC recommends continued vaccination throughout the winter
months. In recent years, influenza activity has peaked in
late December through early March, according to the CDC. For
more information, visit the CDC Web site at www.cdc.gov/nip/flu.
