Editorial Board Suggests Content Improvements

More innovative practice management articles and useful Web links. This is the type of focused content the editorial board of Humana’s YourPractice said readers want to see more of in future issues of the publication.

During its quarterly meeting in April, the editorial board critiqued the Winter 2004 edition and recommended tactics to make the publication a better tool for physicians and office staff in the Humana network.

The board agreed that the front cover of Humana’s YourPractice is “edgy, bright and inviting.” Inside, the articles are typically concise, with easy-to-read market sections.

Particularly useful in the last issue were the Physicians Practice articles and the “Ask an Expert” section, said board member Suzanne MacEwan, a practice administrator in Jacksonville, Fla. She suggested that the editorial team derive article ideas from “Ask an Expert” topics.

Additional coverage considered
Pinpointing areas of concern, the board said it is not interested in general information provided on the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA), terminal illnesses, disease management or public health. “Most physicians already receive this information from other sources,” said board member Pinkal Patel, M.D., of Oviedo, Fla.

Instead, the board encouraged more innovative and focused coverage of human resources, technology, billing, office administration, staffing and practice management issues.

Likely additions to future issues of the publication are “where to find” instructional boxes that would guide readers to useful information on the Humana Web site, www.humana.com, such as where to locate network pharmacies and drug alternatives online.

Humana’s editorial board currently consists of health care providers based in Florida and Milwaukee: Pinkal Patel, M.D.; Suzanne MacEwan, a practice administrator, and Cathy Wershay, a contract coordinator. Editorial board meetings are held via conference call once a quarter.

Editorial Board Members Needed
Humana is expanding the editorial board of Humana’s YourPractice, to secure input from a broader reach of health care providers, and needs help locating new board members.

We welcome physicians, nurses, office administrators, administrative support and hospital staff within the Humana network to participate. Responsibilities include a quarterly conference call to review and critique Humana’s YourPractice — including specific items within an issue and the overall direction of the publication.

For their time, physicians on the board will be compensated $200 an hour and office administrators will receive $100 an hour.
