Humana Supports Use of National Clinical Guidelines

In 2003, Humana refrained from issuing internally developed clinical practice guidelines for common conditions and diseases and began providing links to nationally recognized, evidence-based guidelines on the providers’ section of the Humana Web site, www.humana.com. The decision supports Humana’s continuing progress toward e-enablement of key resources and supports the physician-patient relationship and reduction of unnecessary administrative burden for physicians and Humana.

Under the program, Humana has reduced the number of guidelines it disseminates, to include primarily those required by regulatory and accrediting bodies. A list of the guidelines and links to the documents are included below. If you would like printed versions of the guidelines, please contact your local Humana market representative.

Physicians who treat Humana-insured patients with complex chronic diseases may wish to use the care profiles developed by Accordant, which provides management for patients with certain complex conditions. To obtain copies of care profiles for any of the 13 diseases Accordant manages (see related story at Wide Range of Disease Management Programs Available), call 1-800-948-2497 or
(336) 315-3715.

Please note that all guidelines, regardless of the issuing organization, are merely recommendations and are not intended to substitute for a physician’s professional judgment.
