Pharmacy Prior Authorization Now Online

As part of Humana’s continuing progress toward e-enabling physicians and other health care providers to save time and improve efficiency, pharmacy preauthorization can now be performed online through the provider area of the Humana Web site, www.humana.com. The new capability, which became available in January 2004, enables physicians to obtain online prior authorization for prescription medications that require preapproval, without using the more time-consuming telephonic system.

The new capability automates the services performed by the Humana clinical pharmacy review department, and in most cases, obtaining preapproval online will take only a few minutes — compared to five minutes or more using the traditional telephonic function. In addition, the automated system automatically checks member eligibility.

Physicians who are currently registered through the Humana Web site will be able to use the online capability. The telephonic system will still be available to physicians who are not registered or who wish to make preauthorization requests by telephone.
