"I bring a broad and varied background to my role as medical director at Humana Health Plans. I’ve been exposed to different areas of administrative medicine and health care, from taking care of patients in a private practice, to serving in the capacity of medical director, to consulting for the health care industry, to building business plans, to speaking and writing about all these topics. The broader the background you have, the more you can build on this information to make decisions."

Dr. Dean Greeson admits it would be difficult to write a job description for the position of medical director. His primary responsibilities fall into three areas. He serves as a liaison between Humana’s Atlanta health plan and the hundreds of network physicians in the marketplace, working with them to institute policies and procedures and responding to their questions and concerns. He keeps abreast of new trends in medicine, passing information and recommendations so Humana Health Plans can proactively change its products to better meet the needs of members. And he oversees all medical management services in the Atlanta market for network physicians and patients. "I suppose if I had to reduce my responsibilities to one phrase, it would be ‘clinical consensus-builder.’"

With his varied background and expertise, Dr. Greeson is well-suited to building relationships with and among physicians and other health care providers. But perhaps his greatest strength in this area is his willingness to talk to physicians in the local market. "A common complaint that physicians have, in general, about managed care is that we are in an ‘ivory tower’ and unapproachable. These physicians aren’t in Humana Health Plans’ Atlanta region. I’m accessible, and I pledge to be available."

But network physicians aren’t the only ones benefiting from Dr. Greeson’s commitment to accessibility. "We have a very good idea of what our members want. They want access to their doctors on a regular basis and they want to be able to get information about their health plans and coverage. We’re providing those things." But that’s not all. Dr. Greeson’s office also provides members with information that will help them better manage their own health care. "The emphasis here is on prevention, helping members stay healthy, and providing screening tools and information. When people are healthy, though, they rarely think about these things. But at some point, they will need to know it. We’re helping them be better prepared."

Dr. Greeson is particularly excited about a new partnership between Humana and Healtheon/WebMD, an Internet health care company which connects physicians and consumers to the entire health care industry. The partnership is being launched in the Atlanta market, which means Humana members and physicians eventually should be able to use the Healtheon/WebMD Web site (www.webmd.com) to retrieve health-related information, including claim status inquiries and explanation of benefits, and even make changes to their benefit packages. "This represents a cutting-edge approach to health care management. It’s been personally and professionally satisfying to be involved in its implementation. It’s shouldrevolutionize the way we work with our physicians and members."
