Program Overview
After a member or her physician notifies Humana about a pregnancy, Humana contacts the member by telephone to discuss enrollment. If a member chooses to enroll in HumanaBeginnings, a registered nurse conducts a health assessment of the member by telephone. The nurse works with the member throughout her enrollment in the program to provide education and support, to facilitate services and to refer the member to community resources, if needed. The resources may include prenatal classes and support for breastfeeding, multiple births and bereavement.
All expectant moms who enroll receive individualized support. Educational focuses include:
- Healthy habits during pregnancy
- Fetal development
- Changes to expect during each phase of pregnancy
- Importance of avoiding early delivery
- Preterm labor risk factors, prevention and symptoms
- What to expect during labor
After delivery, nurses call new moms to answer questions and screen for postpartum depression. Program participants have easy access to online and community resources.
