Clinical Tips For Providers

In the next few months, Humana will send important information to members about their health conditions. For this information to be effective and help lead to better disease control, we encourage our network physicians and other health care providers to discuss the following with their patients:

Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States. In January, Humana is reminding members about how to calculate their body mass index (BMI) and the importance of knowing what that number means. Don’t forget to document the BMI in your patient’s medical record and provide counseling around the importance of proper nutrition and appropriate physical activity.

February is National Heart Health Month so Humana is reminding members with hypertension and hyperlipidemia about the importance of having their blood pressure and cholesterol, specifically low density lipoprotein (LDL) numbers, checked.

In February and March, Humana will remind our asthmatic members about the importance of having an updated asthma action plan and medications.

For patients who already have diabetes, it is a good time to remind them of the importance of knowing their “ABC” numbers — A1c level, blood pressure and cholesterol level. Your reinforcement of what lab results are and what they mean can go a long way in assisting the member with self-management.

March is Colorectal Cancer awareness month, so we encourage providers to remind their patients age 50 and older of the importance of colorectal cancer screening.
