Humana Fills “Gaps in Care”

Over the past year, Humana has taken steps to assist its associates and participating physician practices in providing culturally and linguistically appropriate care. The program, called “Gaps in Care,” includes educational efforts as well as a strategy for data collection and quality improvement.

Humana continues to encourage providers to take action to better communicate with patients from diverse cultural backgrounds, including the following:

  • Develop a strategy for when to translate or culturally modify messages for patients. Do not rely on family members to interpret or communicate information. Instead, provide bilingual staff or interpreter services and hire professional translators.
  • Improve patient compliance by putting guidelines within a culturally relevant framework.
  • Make nutrition-oriented consultations more helpful by adapting recipes or advice to fit food preferences within patients’ cultures.

Visit Humana.com for more information. From the provider area, click on “Tools & Resources,” “Provider Tools” and finally “Clinical & Healthcare Resources.”
