Introduction to SmartSummary Rx SM
Humana is offering a new tool, SmartSummary Rx, which can help all of our Medicare members with
Part D benefits better manage their prescriptions.
Compiling information about prescription drugs, as well as doctors’ office samples and over-the-counter
drugs – which are both self-reported by the member, and summarizing it all in one place, this monthly
statement can help facilitate drug safety and continuity of care. Included in the patent pending
SmartSummary Rx is an “Rx Record,” detailing medications the member is taking, refill dates, side
effects, drug interactions and more.
This personalized monthly statement can also help Humana Medicare Part D prescription drug plan
members and their physicians better understand how the Humana Prescription Drug Plan works. Various
components within the monthly statement use the member’s actual claims data to illustrate plan function.
Benefits of SmartSummary Rx
Available as monthly, paper-based and/or online statements, SmartSummary Rx offers individualized
guidance designed to assist members in better planning for future health care and prescription spending.
Personalized Guidance
SmartSummary Rx provides personalized guidance about cost-saving drug alternatives and care
options that are triggered off of the member’s specific prescription drug claims. This
personalization helps take the guesswork out of the decision-making process and has the
opportunity to enhance the patient/clinician relationship and consequently, the member’s future
ealth outcomes.
Proactive Budgeting Advice
SmartSummary Rx provides an enhanced level of detail about the costs of members’ medications
and the value of their plans, to help with budgeting for future health care and prescription
spending.
Individualized Benefits Illustration
SmartSummary Rx uses members’ actual claims data and ties it back to their benefits. This helps
members better understand how these new and unfamiliar plans work. SmartSummary Rx builds
on consumer research, conducted by Humana, indicating that people only truly understand how
their plans work by seeing the benefits illustrated with their own claims data.
Consolidated Plan Details
A rolling 12-month history of prescription claims information is boiled down to include only the
“need to know” and “want to know” details, without a lot of unnecessary information to sift
through.
Actionable Guidance Tools
SmartSummary Rx provides additional guidance tools that can enhance drug safety and
medication-taking compliance. For example, SmartSummary Rx includes a portable prescription
manager that members can use to inform doctors and pharmacists of their current medications, as
well as a refill calendar for each medication the member takes regularly.
SmartSummary Rx Components
Each SmartSummary Rx is designed to help members better understand how they’re utilizing their plan
and how they can ultimately use that information to better manage their health and health finances. Below
are highlights of SmartSummary Rx’s components:
· Where You Are in Your Plan – Shows members where they are within the different stages of
their prescription drug plan. This is a vital feature, given Medicare’s built-in coverage gap, also commonly
called the “doughnut hole.” After a member’s drug costs reach $2,250, a Medicare member will have to
cover $2,850 in out-of-pocket costs before coverage resumes. The information in this component can be
sed to predict how much the member is likely to spend the next month and how far the member is from
moving into the next “stage” of his or her plan, enabling the member to plan for any future coverage
changes.
· Numbers to Watch – Provides a snapshot of the member’s monthly and annual prescription
costs, helping members better track their health expenses throughout the year, as well as to budget for
future prescription drug costs.
· How Your Plan Works for You – Details what the member paid versus what the plan paid; notes
specific discounts and money saved. By summarizing the member costs and plan benefits, this section
helps members predict when they are likely to move into a new stage of their plan.
· Your Prescription Claims – Lists prescription claims and costs, as well as coverage changes;
cost-saving alternatives are noted, when available.
· What’s New in Health Care – Provides brief articles relevant to an individual member’s health;
triggered by claims data and demographics. These articles help members stay up to date on health topics
so they can ask more informed questions about their care when visiting their clinicians.
· Rx Record – Provides members with details needed to track prescriptions, including dosage,
previous refill dates, prescribing doctor and pharmacy information. This section provides new information
on lower-cost alternatives and is located on a separate page at the back of the member’s SmartSummary
Rx, so they can take it with them to their doctor or pharmacist during their next office visit.
