Dual Identifier Period Under Way

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) mandated that the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) adopt a standard unique health identifier for health care providers. HHS has created the National Provider Identifier (NPI) in response to this mandate. The use of the National Provider Identifier (NPI) is mandated on all HIPAA-standard electronic transactions by May 23, 2007. Learn more about National Provider Identifier

New Provider Manual Takes Effect

As of January 1, 2007, Humana’s new Provider Manual for Physicians, Hospitals and Healthcare Providers is in effect for all Humana and ChoiceCare Network providers, regardless of contract date. This manual replaces the Physician Administration Manual (PAM), the Hospital & Ancillary Administration Manual (HAM) and the ChoiceCare Network Reference Guide. New Web Prior Authorization Tool Debuts

This quarter, Humana’s Clinical Guidance Organization will roll out a new, online prior authorization (PA) tool for the most commonly prescribed medications that require PA. To access the prior authorization tool and submit authorizations online via our secured portal, log in or register.

Reminder: Understanding Genetic Testing Coverage

Humana has extensive policies for genetic testing. Various conditions have unique testing guidelines, developed from review policies or from major research organizations, such as the American Cancer Society, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and the National Library of Medicine. Humana Engaging Patients with Provider Performance Indicators

At Humana, we strive to develop technology that will inform and educate both our providers and members. We would like to highlight two of our Web-based tools that have been created to help Humana members evaluate and compare hospitals and physicians. These tools, the Physician Finder Plus and the Pharmacy Locater, accessible to members through Humana’s secured Website, provide information that members can use when choosing in-network physicians and hospitals that best meet their individual needs. Improving Medical Records Documentation

As part of Humana’s commitment to quality improvement, its quality management department randomly selects primary care physicians’ office charts to audit. Humana Contracts with OrthoNet

Humana has contracted with OrthoNet, a musculoskeletal management company, to administer and manage outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy services and to expand its inpatient musculoskeletal subacute medical management review program. These changes will become effective March 1, 2007 in the Kentucky and Ohio markets for all commercial HMO and PPO members. To reflect these changes, Humana has updated its Preauthorization and Notification List in the Clinical & Healthcare Resources section of our website.
