"Developing the next generation of physician leaders within Humana is more important than ever as we aim to redefine healthcare. As we deepen our clinical capabilities and work to simplify and integrate the healthcare experience, it’s essential that our efforts are grounded in the perspective and expertise of physicians. In fact, infusing clinical expertise in our organization has been a game-changer in moving the organization from an insurance mindset to one centered around health."

"Advancing healthcare is a lifetime's worth of work! It's not for those who want to take the easy way. It's not selling people a consumer product. It's giving people something they want and (at times) they don't even know they need. Our innovative physician rotational program develops that next generation of clinical operators who will make the difference between a good day and a bad day for someone's health, their family and the quality of their life."

Chief Medical Officer

We're excited to have you come and learn more about the work we're doing to improve people's health by making the healthcare system less fragmented and more integrated.

If you really want to work at scale, in a setting where you can meaningfully impact the lives of millions and millions of Americans, you need a program like this. You need to have a mechanism, an entree, that allows you to learn, that allows you to appreciate the complexities of how these businesses make decisions, that allow you to understand the complex regulatory environment that governs the work, and that helps you to really understand in a complex, heavily-matrixed environment, how you can be effective, how you can have influence, how you can drive change.

Executive Physician Immersion Program: Value

Humana’s executive leaders discuss the value of the Executive Physician Immersion Program.

The Executive Physician Immersion Program was an avenue for us to take individuals in the clinical sphere that expressed interest and had experience and expertise in business decision-making and prepare them for future opportunities. It's unique. There aren't other programs like this that allow a trained physician two years of protected time to learn business, practically, on the ground. If you really want population health to be efficient and be important, you need to have people who have clinical expertise but also who have business expertise. And what this program does is it allows clinicians with their innate understanding of the hospitals, healthcare, to be business leaders and bring all of that expertise in at the same time. We see them become energized, and as they take advantage of these learning opportunities, they're also becoming valuable members of the team, even during their training, and they tell us that this has opened a lot of doors for them, but it's also created a wonderful chance to apply their knowledge and experience and make a difference in healthcare. When you think about this really disruptive opportunity to change the way we deliver healthcare in the US, it is curious, energetic clinicians who have had experiences on the ground, who understand the business but are ready to roll up their sleeves and really do whatever it takes to get it right, that I think are going to be at the core of our ability to be successful.
