Why do you need health insurance?

We understand you have some questions, so we thought we’d give you some answers. Here are a few you might find interesting.

What types of preventive care could health insurance help pay for?

A. Shots for children, like flu shots.

B. Shots for adults, like tetanus shots.

C. Lab work to test for things like strep throat.

D. Screenings for conditions like diabetes.

E. All of the above.

Good news! The answer is E.

All the above is true. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), policies must cover the cost of in-network preventive care for infants, children and adolescents, including immunizations, annual exams, developmental assessments, hearing and vision screenings, and more. Insurers must also cover the cost of vaccinations and screenings for men and women, including cholesterol, blood pressure, and sexually transmitted diseases. Women receive eight additional preventive services, such as woman's health check-ups and screenings for cancer, such as mammograms and Pap smears with no cost-sharing.

With insurance you needn’t worry about paying any doctor’s fees when it’s time to get the kids their annual school physicals or vaccinations.

Health insurance helps make unexpected medical treatment more affordable.

True or False?

The correct answer is True.

That’s a main reason why families choose to have health insurance. You never know when someone in your family will need care, an X-ray or maybe even surgery. Without the coverage of a health insurance plan, the costs of unexpected treatment can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. With insurance coverage, your costs could be significantly less.

How could my family’s health improve as a result of having health insurance?

A. Family members are more likely to visit a doctor when they’re sick.

B. Prompt doctor visits prevent a condition from worsening.

C. Family members are better able to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

D. All of the above.

The correct answer is D, all of the above.

Families with health insurance tend to see a doctor sooner when someone gets sick than families who lack coverage. With health insurance, you’ll know in advance how much the office visit will cost – there may or may not be a copayment when you see a physician in your insurance company's network of providers, depending on your plan. A family with health insurance is also likely to get treatment sooner, keeping a condition from getting worse. And when you visit the doctor more often, you learn ways to live a healthier lifestyle.

From the shots that doctors recommend all children should have, to screenings for various conditions, to even urgent care or emergency room visits, having health insurance makes a difference in your family’s health and overall well-being.
