How to Apply for Health Insurance?

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), no one who applies for insurance can be turned down due to pre-existing conditions. Plans also now include a minimum level of “essential benefits” – including preventive and wellness visits, lab services, prescription drugs, mental health treatment, hospitalization and maternity and newborn care. This means it’s easier than ever to apply for and enroll in the health insurance plan that best suits your needs and your budget.

1. How to Enroll

You have several options for finding and enrolling in a health insurance plan. These options include:

  • Directly through a Health Insurance Company – You can choose to find plans directly from a health insurance company during the open enrollment period. Visit during open enrollment to learn more about the healthcare options available through Humana. If you miss open enrollment, find out if you qualify for a special enrollment period.   • Talk to an insurance agent – Insurance agents are industry experts who have a strong knowledge of insurance and can offer you a range of options that best fit your needs. An agent will work with you to decide on a plan that fits your needs. You can work with an agent at no extra cost.
  • Enroll through the Health Insurance Marketplace – The Health Insurance Marketplace is an online shopping site for health insurance plans. By visiting either your state or federal Marketplace, you can learn about all the plans available to you and if you qualify for any financial assistance.

2. What You Need to Enroll

You’ll also need to supply some basic information for each person you’re planning to enroll for a health insurance plan. Here’s a quick checklist of what you’ll need:

  • Full name, birth date, and social security number or immigration document numbers for each person you’re enrolling
  • Employer and income information for each person you’re enrolling – pay stubs, W-2 forms/Wage and Tax Statements
  • Policy numbers for any health insurance plans you or your family members have now

3. Getting Financial Assistance

You may qualify for financial assistance through a premium tax credit or cost-sharing assistance to help lower the cost of your health insurance. To receive the tax credit you or your insurance agent can enroll for a health insurance plan through the online Health Insurance Marketplace. Eligibility is based on household income and family size and changes every year based on federal guidelines.
