What is a PPO?

PPO stands for Preferred Provider Organization. A PPO health insurance plan allows for more flexibility and more choices when it comes to your healthcare.

A PPO plan offers a network of healthcare providers to choose from, and you have the freedom to receive care from any in- or out-of-network doctor, specialist or hospital without a referral – even when you travel. Keep in mind, however, that your out-of-pocket medical costs are lower when you choose an in-network provider.

Is a PPO plan right for me?

Consider these key factors when trying to decide if a PPO plan is right for you:

Flexibility

PPO plans do not require you to choose a Primary Care Physician (PCP) and do not require referrals. Let’s say you have a doctor or specialist with which you have a long-standing relationship. A PPO plan would allow you to continue your visits regardless of whether your doctor or specialist is in- or out-of-network and without a referral from a PCP.

It is important to remember, that while you can receive care from any doctor, specialist or hospital you choose, you will save more money by choosing an in-network provider.

If you choose a PPO plan with Humana, you will become part of the Humana network. To find doctors, specialists and hospitals that are included in your network’s select group, use Humana’s easy-to-use Finder Tool.

Higher Monthly Premium

The greater flexibility that comes with a PPO plan often comes with a higher monthly premium, a deductible that must be met before coverage begins, and co-pays. While you can choose to use doctors, specialists or hospitals outside of your network, there will be higher out-of-pocket costs associated with these visits and some services may not be covered. If you are someone who doesn’t see a lot of specialists or would like to have your care coordinated through a PCP, then you might save more money with an HMO plan. The key is to find a balance between the coverage you want and the premium you can afford. For more help deciding which type of plan is right for you, visit our HMO vs. PPO page.
