Humana Notifying Members About Data Security Incident

On March 5, 2019, and April 4, 2019, Humana Inc. notified 5,569 members that a limited amount of their personal information may have been exposed when unauthorized third parties posing as physician provider groups successfully registered on one of Humana’s authorized service providers’ (Availity) web portal. The unauthorized third parties requested eligibility and benefit verification of health plan members by using certain personal information they already possessed. Humana has no reason to believe this information was obtained from Humana or Availity. The incident was complex in nature and affected a number of different health insurance carriers, including Humana.

Providers use Availity’s web portal to check eligibility and benefits for multiple health plans, including Humana.

Availity initially discovered the incident on Nov. 9, 2018, and while conducting an internal review on Feb. 14, 2019. The period of the breach ranged from Jan. 15, 2016, to Feb. 21, 2018, and from May 24, 2018, to Nov. 8, 2018. To date, Humana and Availity have no information indicating that any Humana members’ data has been inappropriately used. The information that may have been exposed during this breach includes name, Humana member identification number, plan effective date, benefit information, and Care Reminders, which are a proactive way to let doctors know if Humana’s records indicate a need for a screening, lab test or other treatment. This incident did not contain the full Social Security number, banking or credit card information.

Humana takes seriously its responsibility to ensure the security of personal information and regrets any concern this incident may have caused. Humana is offering Credit Watch™ Gold with 3-in-1 Monitoring identity theft protection product, through Equifax, for one year for impacted Humana members.

While Availity has policies and procedures in place to maintain the security of customers’ information, they have taken additional steps as a result of this incident, including additional access requirements and enhanced monitoring.

Should Humana members notice any change in their explanation of benefit (EOB) letters, SmartSummary, or medical records that they did not recognize, they should contact Humana right away at 1-866-4ASSIST (1-866-427-7478).
