Radiation therapy

Preauthorization for radiation therapy benefits is administered by HealthHelp, a nationally recognized speciality benefit management organization. Preauthorization is required for radiation therapy services. The terms prior authorization, precertification, preadmission, preauthorization and notification are all used to refer to the preauthorization process.

Exclusions from the preauthorization requirement include the following:

  • Florida Medicare Advantage (MA) health maintenance organization (HMO) members
  • Ochsner commercial and MA HMO members
  • Health Care Partners MA HMO members
  • Chicago risk and delegated providers
  • Medicaid members who do not live in Puerto Rico

For Medicare Advantage (MA) Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) plans, notification is requested, not required.

Submitting preauthorization requests

Humana requires that radiation therapy preauthorization requests and notifications be submitted to HealthHelp. These requirements apply to two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) conformal radiation, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), brachytherapy, stereotactic radiation therapy and proton-beam procedures.

Submitting a request online
Health care providers may submit a request to RadConsult, HealthHelp's online program.
