Improving medication adherence among its members is a key focus of Humana’s clinical programs.
Humana’s efforts to assist members in this area include the following actions:
Telephone and in-person consultations
Mail-order pharmacy options
Humana contracts with mail-order pharmacies, including Humana-owned RightSource, so our members can avoid trips to the pharmacy. RightSource offers our members free shipping to the location of their choice. This eases the burden of filling prescriptions and can improve adherence. In addition, in many of Humana’s Medicare plans, members may receive Tier 1 generic medications for a $0 copayment at RightSource. Members often cite costs as a reason for nonadherence; so, affordable medications may help them stay on track with their prescription therapy. RightSource can also provide Humana members with refill reminders, encouraging them to keep an adequate supply of their medications on hand.
We recognize your patients must determine which pharmacy will best meet their prescription needs. If your patients choose to fill their prescriptions at RightSource, call 1-800-379-0092 or look for “RightSourceRx” in your eprescribing software.
The value of 90-day prescriptions
An analysis of Humana claims shows 82 percent of Medicare members who fill 90-day prescriptions are adherent to their medication regimen, while only 68 percent of 30-day fillers are adherent. The analysis notes 79 percent of commercial members with 90-day fills are adherent, a rate which is 21 percent higher than that of commercial members with 30-day fills. A comparison of Humana members also reveals those using a mail-order pharmacy are about 5 percent more likely to be adherent than those using retail pharmacies. Please encourage adherence by providing 90-day prescriptions for maintenance drugs.
Teaming up with physicians
We know medication adherence consultations with patients can be time-consuming. Do you have a patient you believe would benefit from a medication adherence discussion with a nurse or pharmacist? To refer a patient for a free, Humana-facilitated consultation, please call 1-800-491-4164 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. local time, Monday through Friday.
To enhance the medication adherence discussions you have with your patients, Humana provides the following member-focused fliers. You are encouraged to print and distribute these materials as needed.
