Wellness program offers a path to health, cost control and productivity
Research shows that employees engaged in a wellness program have higher productivity, less unscheduled absences, and lower healthcare costs.
Many employers now believe that wellness programs have the ability to curb rising healthcare costs and improve employee productivity. However, few of these employers see firm evidence that wellness programs can achieve these goals over the long term.
Humana recently completed research from an ongoing study (now containing three years of study data) of its own wellness program. The study found a clear and positive correlation between employee engagement in the program and lower health claims and fewer unscheduled absences.
The largest impact on healthcare costs was on members with lifestyle-related chronic conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes. Engaged members with these conditions had 12 percent lower health claims costs than unengaged members with these conditions.
