Medicare Savings Programs

How does it work?

Each state offers Medicare Savings Programs to Medicare beneficiaries whose income falls below a certain level. Most states also consider your assets when determining eligibility. If you qualify, these state-sponsored programs will help pay your monthly Part A or Part B Medicare premiums. This could mean an average of an extra $164.90 in your Social Security check each month. These programs will not change your health plan benefits or coverage. They are provided by your state at no cost to you.

Am I eligible?

In determining who is eligible, all states will look at monthly income and most will consider assets as well.

Income includes your Social Security check, pension and any other money you receive each month. If you are working, not all of your earned income will count.

Assets include bank accounts, life insurance, stocks and bonds—but will not include your first home or car. Again, not all states have asset limits.

Your financial information is safe

Any financial information you share with Humana will be held in the strictest confidence. Information will not be released or shared with anyone who is not directly assisting with your application for the Medicare Savings Programs. It is the state, not Humana, that makes the final determination on eligibility for a Medicare Savings Program.
