When your baby is teething, it’s only a matter of time until that first chomper pokes through the gums.

Here are some tips on how to choose your baby’s first toothbrush and brush your baby’s teeth.

What is a good toothbrush for babies?

There are 4 common suggestions for any baby toothbrush:

  1. Soft bristles (gentle on teeth and gums)
  2. Small head (fits easily in baby’s mouth)
  3. Long handle (easy to hold and reach the back of mouth)
  4. Accepted by the American Dental Association (ADA) (verified safe and effective)

Baby toothbrushes come in fun shapes like a banana or giraffe to make brushing a more playful experience. You can also look for a brush with your baby’s favorite colors or cartoon characters.

If your baby resists a traditional toothbrush, use a rubber or silicone finger brush instead. These brushes fit over your finger like a sewing thimble and are covered in little nubs. Double-sided finger brushes can offer twice the cleaning power by brushing the top teeth, bottom teeth and gums at the same time.

How to brush a baby’s teeth

Brushing your baby's teeth is similar to brushing your own teeth. First, dampen the bristles and add a tiny bit of ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste. Babies only need about the size of a grain of rice.

Next, brush all sides of each tooth. You can gently brush the gums as well if they don’t appear to be sore or tender. As more teeth come in, give them all the same gentle and thorough cleaning twice a day.
