Does Medicare cover hearing aids?

About 1 in 3 Americans between the ages of 65–74 have hearing loss. Nearly half of Americans older than 75 have difficulty hearing.1

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover hearing aids or exams for fitting hearing aids, but Part B (Medical Insurance) may help cover diagnostic hearing and balance exams.2 Also, some Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans may offer extra benefits that cover hearing. Let’s take a closer look at the details.

Does Medicare cover hearing tests?

Yes, but only Part B will help cover diagnostic hearing and balance exams if your doctor or healthcare provider orders them. You pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after you meet the Part B deductible and a hospital copayment if the exam is done in an outpatient setting.2

Does Medicare cover hearing implants?

Yes, Medicare covers some surgically implanted prosthetic devices, including:3

  • Auditory Osseo integrated and Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI) devices: Auditory Osseo Integrated devices use bone conduction to transmit sound vibrations directly to the inner ear, bypassing the outer and middle ear. ABI devices are designed for individuals with non-functioning auditory nerves and deliver sound signals directly to the brainstem to restore a sense of hearing.
  • Bone-anchored hearing aids (BAHA): BAHAs also use bone conduction to transmit sound vibrations directly to the inner ear and bypass the outer and middle ear. They’re often used for individuals with conductive hearing loss, single-sided deafness or mixed hearing loss.

How much do hearing aids typically cost?

On average, a set of hearing aids can cost between $200–$7,000 or more.4 More expensive hearing aids may come with extra features such as Bluetooth wireless connectivity and tinnitus masking.5

Yes, Medicare covers cochlear implants when ordered by a doctor or other health care provider. Either Part A or Part B will cover the implant depending on where the surgery takes place.6

2. What’s the difference between cochlear implants and hearing aids?

Cochlear implants and hearing aids have many differences. First, hearing aids are for mild to moderate hearing loss and cochlear implants are for severe hearing loss. Second, hearing aids can be easily removed while cochlear implants are surgically implanted in the ear. Last, hearing aids amplify sound while cochlear implants directly stimulate the auditory nerve.
