How much does a Medicare Supplement plan cost?

A couple meets with a Humana agent in their living room.

Medicare Supplement (also called Medigap) insurance plans help pay some out-of-pocket costs for covered services that Original Medicare doesn’t, like deductibles, copays and coinsurance. They’re sold by private insurance companies. Depending on where you live, average Medicare Supplement plan premiums may range from $32–$550 per month.1

Key points

  • You can enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan only if you are on Original Medicare.
  • You cannot enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan if you have a Medicare Advantage plan.
  • The 10 Medicare Supplement plans available are Plans A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M and N, but not all plans are available in all states.
  • The basic benefits in each lettered plan are the same no matter which insurance company sells it, so it’s easy to shop by price.

Understanding Medicare Supplement plan costs

Medicare Supplement plans help pay for covered healthcare costs that basic Medicare doesn’t. Depending on your state of residence and your plan choice, these may include:

  • Out-of-pocket costs such as Part A and Part B copayments, coinsurance and deductibles
  • Up to 365 extra days of a hospital stay once Medicare benefits are used
  • Up to 3 pints of blood as needed
  • Medicare Part A copayments for hospice care
  • Emergency medical care when you travel outside the U.S.

Medicare Supplement plans don’t cover copayments for Part D prescription drugs.

Compare Medicare Supplement plan costs

It’s important to compare your Medigap plan options. As a general rule, Plans A through G provide benefits at higher premiums with limited out-of-pocket costs compared to Plans K through N. Plans K through N offer similar benefits at lower premiums but with higher out-of-pocket costs.

Factors that may affect your Medicare Supplement plan costs

If possible, sign up for a Medicare Supplement plan during the 6-month period when you’re first eligible. This begins the first day of the month in which you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this time, insurers can’t deny coverage or charge you higher premiums based on your health. If you wait too long, you may be subject to medical underwriting and your application could be denied.

There are some exceptions, such as qualifying for “guaranteed issue rights” under certain circumstances.

What are guaranteed issue rights?

If you qualify for guaranteed issue rights, insurance companies must sell you a Medigap policy regardless of your health status as long as you apply within the designated timeframe. And they can’t cancel your plan as long as you continue to pay your monthly premiums.

The cost of healthcare in retirement is a major concern for seniors.2 Even with Medicare coverage, out-of-pocket costs for healthcare services and prescription drugs may be tough to manage. Medicare Supplement insurance plans may help take the sting out of out-of-pocket costs in retirement.
