Who can enroll in Medicare

Medicare eligibility varies based on certain life events and special circumstances.

You’re eligible for Medicare if:

  • You are a U.S. citizen or have been a permanent legal resident for at least five years
  • You are age 65 or older
  • You are under 65 with certain disabilities
  • You have ESRD (end-stage renal disease ) – permanent kidney failure treated with dialysis or a transplant

Enrollment and eligibility exceptions

There are other times when you may become eligible for Medicare. These special circumstances include, but are not limited to, people who:

  • Are 65 and older, still working and covered under a group health plan based on current employment
  • Had Medicare Part B in the past but dropped it
  • Turned down Medicare Part B when they first got Part A coverage
  • Are a disabled widow or widower between the ages of 50 and 65 but haven’t applied for disability benefits because they are already getting another kind of Social Security benefit
  • Are a government employee and became disabled before age 65
