Exercise is vital for older adults because it can prevent or delay health problems likely to occur due to older age.
SilverSneakers® is a fitness program designed to keep those 65 years or older active. With a Medicare Advantage plan, SilverSneakers may be free. This fitness program includes partnerships with local gyms and fitness centers. In addition, SilverSneakers offers many online exercise activities so you can work on improving your health and well-being from the comfort of your home.
Although SilverSneakers is not included with Original Medicare Parts A and B, you can enjoy this benefit with some Medicare Advantage plans. Medicare Advantage plans, also referred to as Medicare Part C, are administered by private insurance companies and provide all the benefits of Original Medicare, but most offer much more. Gym memberships and fitness programs are commonly included in Medicare Advantage plans.
SilverSneakers members have access to online fitness classes, on-demand content and fitness centers across the country. They also benefit from various social events, exercise classes and amenities.
The SilverSneakers FLEX program is an added benefit for older adults and provides a wide variety of exercise classes at non-traditional locations.
By having a SilverSneakers membership, older adults can improve their:
- The ability to maintain physical and mental effort
- The ability to withstand force or pressure
- The ability to control one’s body position
- The ability to be firm in position
It's important to know that a SilverSneakers membership is free with some Medicare Advantage plans. However, additional fees may be charged with some classes or programs. If your health insurance does not cover the cost of a SilverSneakers membership, special pricing may still be available for seniors at your gym or fitness center.
Humana can help you find participating SilverSneakers locations.
Some Medicare Advantage plans offer SilverSneakers as a supplemental benefit at no extra cost, while others may charge a small monthly fee. This benefit is not currently available through Original Medicare (Parts A and B).
Be sure to speak with your insurance company and see if their Medicare Advantage plans include SilverSneakers coverage.
