Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine each year. The typical flu season is fall and winter, but people can get the flu all year.
What you need to know about the flu vaccine
Flu vaccine facts
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost everyone age 6 months and up should get a flu vaccine, especially:
- Adults 65 and older
- Anyone with a weakened immune system or chronic condition (like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or congestive heart failure)
- Children younger than 5
- Pregnant women
A flu vaccine:
- By nasal spray is sometimes available
- Can help protect you against different flu strains, as last year’s vaccine may not protect you from getting sick this year
- Can help reduce your risk of getting the flu and decrease the chance that you’ll spread the flu to someone else
- Is free each year for Humana Healthy Horizons™ enrollees
- Is good for you even if you’re healthy, because, without showing symptoms, healthy people can get sick, carry the flu virus, or spread the flu to someone else
- May be available as an egg-free vaccine alternative, which may be a good option if you’re allergic to eggs
- Will not give you the flu
It’s never too late to get the flu vaccine. Talk to your doctor about the best option for you and your family, so you can stay healthy and fight flu.
