South Carolina Medicaid: Transportation benefits
Humana Healthy Horizons® in South Carolina members have coverage for certain types of transportation services. Other types of transportation services may be available to you through the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
Covered transportation services
If you have a medical emergency, call 911.
Humana Healthy Horizons in South Carolina covers ambulance transportation:
- To and from medical appointments for members whose doctor(s) decide(s) must be transported on a stretcher and cannot ride in a car
- To and from medical appointments for members who are bedridden or paralyzed
- To and from medical appointments for members using a
value-added service (e.g., an member aged 21 and older could ask us to authorize transportation to a vision appointment)
You must get prior authorization for non-emergency ambulance or stretcher services. If you believe you need access to non-emergency ambulance or stretcher services, call Member Services at 866-432-0001 (TTY: 711), Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 8 p.m., Eastern time.
Non-emergency transportation services
We do not cover transportation you may need for non-emergency medical care.
South Carolina Healthy Connections may pay for transportation you may need for non-emergency medical care. South Carolina Healthy Connections must cover the medical care you need. If you need a ride, you must talk to the transportation broker in your county to schedule a trip.
South Carolina Healthy Connections uses ModivCare (formerly LogistiCare) as its transportation broker.
Transportation is available for:
- Doctor visits
- Dialysis
- Drug store or other types of medical appointments
- Lab work
- X-rays

To ask for a ride, call at least 3 days before your appointment.
To cancel a ride, call at least 24 hours in advance.
