Healthy eating for a healthy weight

A healthy way of life involves many choices. A balanced diet or healthy eating plan is part of it. And our health coaches are here to help, too.

Develop a healthy eating plan

According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2015–2020,1 a healthy eating plan:

  • Highlight fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat dairy products
  • Include lean meats, beans, eggs, and nuts
  • Include foods low in saturated and trans fats, cholesterol, salt, and added sugars
  • Stays within your daily calorie needs

Eat healthy and enjoy it

A healthy eating plan includes having a variety of foods. Instead of thinking about the foods you can’t have, focus on what you can have, including:

  • Fresh, frozen, or canned fruits and vegetables
  • Calcium-rich foods

Remix your recipes by:

  • Baking or grilling instead of frying or breading
  • Replacing meat with beans
  • Trying low-calorie options

You don’t have to give up comfort foods

Healthy eating is about balance. Enjoy your favorites, but remember:

  • Have this type of food once in a while
  • Balance this type of food with healthier foods or exercise

A little can go a long way. You can include almost any food in your healthy eating plan and still work on being a healthy weight.

Work one-on-one with a health coach

Get help reaching and maintaining a healthy weight by:

  • Enrolling in the Humana Healthy Horizons® Weight Management Program (for members 12 and older)
  • Completing 6 telephonic coaching sessions with your health coach

To qualify for and complete the program, you also must:

  • Have a well-being checkup with your primary care physician upon enrollment and asking them to complete, sign, and submit a medical clearance form
  • Have a well-being checkup with your primary care physician at the end of the program

Feeling great is a reward in itself—but it gets better. Earn rewards through Go365 for Humana Healthy Horizons® for completing the weight management program:

  • $10 in rewards for enrolling in the program

Members who are 18 and older can register to create a Go365 for Humana Healthy Horizons account. You must have your Medicaid member ID.

* Members with a MyHumana account can use their MyHumana sign-in information (username and password) to access Go365 for Humana Healthy Horizons, after downloading the app.
